UK vs. Michigan Celebration
The University of Kentucky has a long history of a tradition of excellence in their men's basketball program. And while things have remained much the same on the court throughout the years, off the court students have adopted new traditions in recent years. The newest of these traditions is the flocking of students to State Street as the celebrations of this party hub live and die by the success of the men's basketball team.
A 2-block stretch of road just on the outskirts of campus, State Street and adjacent areas have provided a space for students to cheer on the Wildcats. In recent years, following the Wildcats' Sweet 16, Elite 8 and Final Four match-ups students have flooded the street with chants, dancing, drinking and fireworks.
Some students have taken it upon themselves to engage in egregious activities such as the burning of couches, illegal drug use, and removal of stops signs. With a watchful eye Lexington and UK police line the rows of houses, intervening in situations when they are called upon to protect the safety of UK students and fans in attendance.
